Itchy Skin Treatment
Let’s face it we have all had itchy (pruritus) skin sometime in our life. Whether it was caused from a rash,
poison ivy, dermatitis and psoriasis it is uncomfortable. Other causes of itchy skin may be an underlying disease
such as kidney failure or liver disease. It may appear normal to you, or it can have blisters, bumps, rough skin; a
leathery texture or redness.
There are many creams and ointments for itch skin treatment. There re wet dressings, light therapy and sometimes
medications would be taken. When one does it themselves, cool baths and anti itch products can help with the itchy
skin.
The first thing one should to seek an itchy skin treatment is to find out the cause. Going to your doctor will
allow him to look at the skin. A dermatologist might be called in if the itchy skin lasts more than a couple of
weeks and won’t improve with home remedies. The doctor might ask you if you can explain why your skin itches so
much, if your skin itches all over or maybe if you have sudden weight loss, change in the bowel habits or if you
are tired all the time.
Most itchy skin is caused by dry skin. It can be caused by the lack of humidty in some parts of the country, too
hot or too cold weather; showering with too cold or too hot water. This saps all the moisture out of the skin,
leaving it very dry and it can become uncomfortable. Using an itchy skin treatment at home or getting over the
counter creams and such will usually take care of it.
But sometimes there are serious problems when it comes to itchy skin. Internally it could be caused by thyroid
problems, certain cancers, kidney failure or an iron deficiency. The skin will usually look normal to the layman’s
eye, but the trained doctor can see the difference. Some will have to use a special cream or take medication for
their itchy skin treatment. There are test that can be given to determine if that itchy skin is internal or
not.
Many pregnant women will have itchy skin, due to the stretching of the skin as the baby grows. A good itchy skin
treatment would be a cream or lotion that is applied two or three times a day. Once the baby is born it usually
goes away. Some may have a drug reaction, if taking antifungal drugs or narcotic pain pills. Itchy skin treatment
for those would be different than over the counter creams or lotions.
One of the most common skin diseases is psoriasis. A good itchy skin treatment may or may not work on it.
Psoriasis affects the skin cells and when constantly scratching it, can lead to deep read rashes that might or
might not go away. This is often very painful and some will scab over or bleed. People with arthritis might end up
with psoriasis, but using an itchy skin treatment such as over the counter cortisone cream might work. Getting a
little bit of natural sunshine might help as well.
